What's New

Digital Radiographs

Digital radiographs--which are displayed on a computer screen almost instantly--are quickly replacing traditional film radiographs. Old Dominion Equine Associates has recently acquired this technology. The advantages are two-fold: instant evaluation and improved image quality.  Though film is being phased out, O.D.E.A. will keep its conventional radiography unit for the few applications where digital radiographs are not ideal.

The digital system is especially important for emergency situations where a prompt diagnosis is important. It is also very useful when radiographing larger areas of the horse such as the back or neck. The doctors will know they got the best images immediately.

Another advantage of the digital system is the availability of x-ray images on-line. Images can be sent to other veterinarians and clients. There is also an environmental impact. Silver, lead, and fixing chemicals used in conventional film processing will no longer be necessary.

Digital radiography is the future of veterinary medicine and we are proud to bring this useful technology to our clients.

Digital Ultrasound

The veterinarians at Old Dominion Equine Associates proudly announce the recent acquisition of two digital ultrasound machines. These machines have greatly enhanced our ability to diagnose and monitor injury.

Digital ultrasound has changed ultrasound in the same way digital x-ray has forever changed x-rays. Digital ultrasound allows for higher resolution pictures, digital recording of video clips or still frames. These machines are now compact enough to allow us to bring this level of technology to the farm. Additionally, we will be able to create CD-Roms for those of you who like to keep your ultrasound images on file or we can e-mail the images to interested parties.

Our hope is that these technological advancements will allow us to diagnose injuries more effectively in the hopes of a speedier and more complete recovery.

Shockwave

High energy, focused shockwave therapy is one of the most promising new treatment modalities available in veterinary medicine.  It has shown dramatic results in treating tendon, ligament, and joint injuries as well as chronic back pain.
